Inspired by one of Roald Dahl’s most beloved books, Matilda the Musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company arrives for a five-week run at Norwich Theatre Royal on July 16. An incredibly popular production, the multi-award-winning show has been seen by more than 7.7 million people worldwide over the past eight years.
The uplifting tale is about a gifted and brave girl, Matilda Wormwood, who loves books but is born to parents who don’t understand her and reject her because they wanted a boy, not a girl. Matilda is sent to a school run by the terrifying and bullying Miss Trunchbull, but she is befriended by caring teacher Miss Honey and her fightback begins…
Here’s the trailer:
The cast for the touring production includes Elliot Harper as Miss Trunchbull, Sebastien Torkia as Mr Wormwood, Carly Thoms as Miss Honey and former West End cast member Rebecca Thornhill reprises her role as Mrs Wormwood. The title role of Matilda is shared by four young actors: Scarlett Cecil, Olivia Juno Cleverley, Freya Scott and Sophie Woolhouse.
The musical was originally commissioned in 2010 by the RSC. It was written by renowned playwright Denis Kelly, while comedian, actor and musician Tim Minchin wrote the lyrics and music. The show’s memorable tunes include “Revolting Children” and “When I Grow Up”.
Having premiered at the RSC’s Stratford-upon-Avon home, the show transferred to London’s West End where it opened to rave reviews. It has now played in over 60 cities worldwide and won over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical. It swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards with a record-breaking seven awards, and also garnered four Tony Awards and a Tony Honour for Excellence in the Theatre for the four girls who shared the title role on Broadway. The London production continues to play in the West End where it is now in its seventh year
As it travels around the country on its first UK and Ireland tour, the show is accompanied by a specially devised education programme for schools called “Change My Story”. The programme which accompanies the tour, will see four Norfolk schools coming together to put on their own special Matilda schools production in the summer in an initiative with the RSC which will include courses, workshops and creative projects. The participating schools are Howard Junior School in King’s Lynn, Edward Worlledge Ormiston Academy in Gt Yarmouth, and Norwich schools Ormiston Victory Academy in Costessey and Catton Grove Primary.
Matilda the Musical will be performed at Theatre Royal Norwich between Tuesday July 16th and Saturday 17th August.
